SHARE THE PERSPECTIVE
Closing a tab, logging out and revoking a linked device are three different actions.

There is no absolute winner in web messenger security for every scenario. Encryption is only one layer of security; for genuinely private chat in a browser, you must also manage device security, active sessions and browser extensions.

Messengers such as WhatsApp Web and Element run on the web. Signal Desktop is an installed desktop application, not a website. Telegram Web relies on cloud chats, and each product’s properties must be examined separately.

Key security points at a glance

  • End-to-end encryption (E2EE) protects data in transit, but does not prevent information theft by malware, including malware that captures the screen.
  • Livara uses hybrid post-quantum end-to-end encryption (Hybrid Post-Quantum E2EE) for direct messages, compatible private groups with E2EE enabled, and media covered by those conversations. Channels are not end-to-end encrypted and are readable by the server.
  • Signal Desktop is an installed application, not a web app; a browser extension therefore normally cannot directly read its chat window. Device malware remains a separate issue.
  • Telegram Web does not provide end-to-end encryption for ordinary cloud chats.
  • Logging out of an active messenger session on shared computers is essential to prevent subsequent unauthorized access.

What determines web messenger security?

Web application security rests on four pillars: the encryption algorithm, session management, device trustworthiness and code delivery. In the web version, the code delivery and update chain depends on the web service. The browser cache or a Service Worker can retain previous resources, so not all code is necessarily downloaded afresh on every visit. The main risks specific to the web environment are:

  1. Abandoned sessions: authorization stored in the browser to keep the user connected.
  2. Malicious extensions: extensions with access to page content and decrypted messages.
  3. Local data: downloaded files left behind on shared computers.

Comparing encrypted web messengers

These five messengers have different architectures. Below is a practical assessment of their security properties.

Messenger Runtime environment Protection and encryption Main risks on the web / shared computers
Livara Web and Android According to the documentation, E2EE for direct messages and compatible private groups in E2EE mode; channels are server-readable. Proof Lab demonstrates P-256/HKDF/AES-GCM and hash checks, not an architecture audit or a full protocol implementation. Open sessions or malware on a shared computer, as with all web tools.
WhatsApp Web Browser According to the documentation, messages in multi-device mode are end-to-end encrypted (E2EE). A linked device remaining active after you leave the computer.
Signal Desktop Standalone application All messages are end-to-end encrypted by default. Physical access if the screen is not locked or you have not logged out.
Telegram Web Browser Ordinary cloud chats do not have E2EE. An open session provides immediate access to all cloud chats.
Element Browser, desktop E2EE in rooms where encryption is enabled, based on the Matrix protocol. Complexity of device verification and securely retaining recovery keys.

Note: Always read each service’s official documentation before transferring highly confidential data.

How should you choose the right option?

First identify the type of environment. Signal Desktop is an installed linked application; do not infer that an official “Signal Web” exists. WhatsApp’s multi-device architecture also explains why each linked device is an important endpoint.

In Telegram, do not confuse cloud chat with Secret Chat. Private group membership does not mean the group has E2EE. In Element, check room encryption and device trust separately; self-hosting alone does not guarantee client or recipient security.

For Livara, start with the published product boundaries. This article does not claim absolute cryptographic superiority or the existence of a native desktop app for it. Your choice should match your need for browser access, device management and security evidence for the version in use.

Why is logging out of an active messenger session critical?

Logging out of an active messenger session is an important measure for reducing risk on shared computers. It invalidates stored authorizations, but does not erase downloaded or copied messages.

To stay secure on computers that are not your own, follow these steps:

  1. Log out of your account directly through the messenger’s user interface.
  2. Go to your smartphone and revoke the shared computer’s access in Linked Devices.
  3. Manually delete downloaded files from the computer.
  4. Use a separate browser profile or Incognito mode so session data is normally not retained after all Incognito windows are closed, although this does not prevent malware.

Extensions and the risks of shared computers

An extension allowed to read page information can read decrypted messages directly from your browser. At that point, even the strongest network algorithms cannot help. To create a secure environment for private browser chat:

  • Use a separate browser profile with no extensions installed.
  • Keep the operating system up to date.
  • At work, remember that organizational monitoring software may capture your screen contents.

A short test for a web session

Using a non-sensitive message, check how closing the tab differs from logging out. Then revoke the session from your primary device and see what content the browser still displays. Check the downloads folder separately. This test shows the ordinary behavior of that version, not a guarantee that all copies are erased.

For high-risk conversations, a computer you do not trust is not a suitable choice; Incognito mode or a strong protocol does not turn it into a trustworthy device.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is a web messenger inherently less secure than a desktop application?

No. Both environments have their own risks. The web is exposed to extension risks, while desktop applications depend on the security of the installation package supply chain. In either case, an infected device can expose information.

Is Incognito mode enough for private browser chat?

No. Incognito limits retention of some browsing data; downloads and bookmarks may remain, and device malware is still a risk. A separate profile is not a security boundary against the device administrator or malware either.

What should I do if I forgot to log out of an active messenger session on a shared computer?

Immediately open the main application on your phone, go to Active Sessions / Linked Devices, and manually terminate the relevant session.
