SHARE THE PERSPECTIVE
Registration without a number does not mean complete anonymity; also examine account discovery and recovery.

When choosing a messenger without a phone number, separate three issues: the information required to register, how contacts find you, and the data the network or service sees about your communication. Not requiring a SIM card addresses only the first issue; it does not guarantee anonymity or make metadata disappear.

Comparing registration and contact discovery

This comparison relies on public product documentation, not independent speed testing or traffic measurements. Do not generalize beta conditions to every version.

Messenger Account without a number How to connect with contacts What to check before choosing
Livara According to product documentation, no number or email Account ID and in-app sharing features Routing metadata and group membership are separate from encrypted content
Session Yes Account ID or contact link Onion routing does not eliminate every identification risk
SimpleX Yes; no global public user identifier Invitations and connection links Local database retention and device migration methods matter
Threema Yes; linking a number or email is optional Threema ID and ID scanning Check app purchase and ID recovery before migrating
Signal A numberless option is documented for the Android beta Username for discovering a numberless account Feature availability and recovery differ from regular registration
Matrix Depends on the selected server Matrix ID on that server Read registration, data retention and key recovery policies separately

An important Signal change in 2026

The claim that “Signal always requires a number in every version” is no longer accurate. Signal’s official guide describes numberless registration for Android beta version 8.28 and later: a one-time purchase, account ID and recovery key replace reliance on a number. This must not be generalized to every stable release or operating system. The guide also warns that losing keys can mean losing access. Before choosing, check the registration path available in your own app.

How do Livara, Session and SimpleX differ?

Livara: The security documentation distinguishes direct messages, compatible private groups and public channels. Content in the first two is end-to-end encrypted; public channels are server-readable. Routing and membership information remain visible to the service. A hybrid protocol alone does not prove superiority in privacy, speed or anonymity.

Session: According to the official FAQ, creating an account requires neither a number nor an email, and messages pass through an onion-routing network. This structure is designed to reduce what any one intermediary can see. It does not imply “complete metadata concealment” or immunity to infected devices, malicious contacts or traffic correlation. A recovery ID is not the same as a complete history backup.

SimpleX: The official documentation describes separate connections rather than a global public identifier. This distinction matters for contact discovery design, but message content, a sent file or reusing a name and photo can reveal identity. Send invitations through a channel that fits your privacy needs.

No comparative testing was performed for this article, so we do not rank Session as definitively slow or Livara as faster. Test call quality, battery consumption and message delivery on your actual device and network.

Do not exclude Threema because it is paid

Threema’s guide says its independent ID does not depend on a number or email and address-book synchronization is optional. “Not free” differs from “not numberless.” An open-source client, security audits and price are also three separate criteria; one must not be scored in place of another.

A practical test before moving conversations

  1. Create a test account: without granting contact access, see what information is actually required. If payment is required, consider store and payment privacy as well.
  2. Verify the contact independently: a long identifier does not prove its owner is the intended person. Compare the link or verification code through a familiar channel.
  3. Send a non-sensitive message: examine the encryption indicator, message requests and notification behavior.
  4. Read about recovery: the account, identity key, contact list and message history are four different things; examine secure backup and recovery with these distinctions in mind. Before erasing the old device, make sure which of them will return.
  5. Simulate an outage: briefly disconnect and reconnect to observe pending and delivered states. Connection recovery does not mean sending without internet.

Which option is most suitable?

If your priority is not giving a number, start with the registration column; if reducing network visibility matters more, read the routing documentation and threat model. For family communication, a contact’s ability to retain a recovery key and use the app daily matters too. No messenger wins on all these criteria through a single feature.

Does numberless mean internet-free?

No. Not using a SIM card at registration does not mean offline communication. An internet messenger still needs an accessible network path.

Does a username hide the number from the service?

Not necessarily. A username can hide the number from contacts while the underlying account remains registered with a number. Examine the registration path and account discovery settings separately.
