A screen replacement can become a recovery problem if your only copy of a conversation, or the credential needed to recover it, stays on the phone. Before handing over your device, check both your saved data and your way back into it.
1. Check what your backup actually contains
Start a fresh backup and confirm it finishes. On Android, review Backup details rather than assuming every app is covered. Google warns that some apps cannot back up or restore all their data.
On iPhone, distinguish syncing from backup. When Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages sync separately and are not included in the daily iCloud Backup. Check that syncing has finished too.
For each chat app you rely on, read its current recovery instructions. Identify the backup account, supported restore method, and any separate recovery requirement. A phone-level backup alone is not proof that every conversation is recoverable.
2. Keep recovery access outside the repair phone
A backup stores data; recovery credentials help you regain access. Check both before you lose temporary access to the device.
If you already use an Apple Account recovery key, locate its safe copy. Apple says not to store it in Apple Passwords, iCloud Photos, Notes, or iCloud Drive, where an account lockout could make it inaccessible. Do not enable this optional feature casually before repair: it turns off Apple’s standard account recovery process.
For Google accounts using 2-Step Verification, check that you have an alternative sign-in method. Backup codes, where available, can replace the usual second step and should be kept private.
If a chat app requires its own recovery key or backup password, follow that app’s instructions. An Apple recovery key or Google sign-in code is not a universal chat-recovery credential.
3. Verify recovery before removing data
If you have a compatible spare or replacement phone, use the supported restore process before removing accounts or erasing the original. Open several older and recent conversations, then check important attachments.
Without a second device, verify backup completion and recovery access, but recognize that this is not a full restore test. Do not factory-reset your only copy just to test the backup. Discuss available service options if you cannot establish a workable recovery plan.
4. Follow the correct repair instructions
Apple’s current appointment guidance includes backing up, finishing iCloud syncing, turning off Apple Cash, and removing Wallet cards and passes. Its Find My instructions depend on software: iOS 27 and later uses Ready for Repair or Trade-In; iOS 26 and earlier requires turning off Find My. Follow the current instructions for your service route.
Eligible Pixel phones offer Repair Mode, which lets technicians diagnose the device in a separate environment. Back up anyway: Google says repairs affecting storage can still require data deletion. Remove your physical SIM before sending the phone.
Never give a technician your passwords, device unlock code, recovery key, or backup codes. Apple says to remain present if software support requires you to enter credentials yourself.
5. Keep the backup until you have checked the return
After repair, restore through the supported setup process if necessary. Check your chats and attachments again before discarding any temporary recovery copies. If you turned off Find My, turn it back on. If a restore is incomplete, pause cleanup and consult the relevant official support instructions.
A practical example
Before a Pixel battery repair, Maya checks the latest backup and her messaging app’s recovery requirements. She confirms she can sign in without the repair phone, tests a supported restore on a compatible spare, and opens an older conversation with photos. Only after those checks does she prepare the original for service. Her recovery codes stay safely at home.
Use this checklist before your appointment: backup complete, recovery access available, chats checked, service preparation finished, credentials kept private.
